Yes, networking can be an effective way to gain new business, as it can help you build relationships with potential clients or customers. But you should not go into a networking event convinced you are going to sell to the room, its all about building relationships and helping others, as a well know organisations says "Givers Gain"! Here are some quick tips for networking to gain new business:

  1. Identify your target audience: Before you start networking, think about who your ideal customers or clients are. Identify the groups or events where you're likely to meet these people. Those who've done our sales course know this means identifying your Zebras!

  2. Be prepared: Have a clear idea of what you have to offer and be prepared to explain it in a concise and compelling way. Bring business cards or other materials that showcase your work- But let people ask for your details or if appropriate ask if they would like your contact details but don't be spraying your cards round.

  3. Listen actively: When you meet new people, listen to what they have to say and ask questions about their business or interests. This can help you identify ways that you or your network can help them.

  4. Follow up: After the event or meeting, follow up with your new contacts to keep the conversation going. Send a brief email thanking them for the conversation and offering to help in any way you can.
